Jacira da Conceição

Jacira da Conceição is an artist born in Chão Bom, on the island of Santiago, Cabo Verde. She has been living and working in Montemor-o-Novo, Portugal, since 2017.
Her practice began in 2015 through an engagement with traditional Cape Verdean pottery. Earlier, in 2009, she traveled outside Cabo Verde for the first time, cycling across South America for a year. During this journey, she spent time in the Brazilian state of Maranhão, where she lived for a month in the Quilombo of Itamatatiua, learning ceramic techniques from local artisans—an experience that continues to inform her work.
Her artistic practice addresses questions of identity, race, beauty, insularity, and feminism, incorporating materials and forms associated with Cape Verdean traditions. Through her work, she seeks to contribute to the recognition and visibility of African women artists within the contemporary art world.
