Da Hyoung Choi
Da Hyoung Choi was born in South Korea but lives and works in Scotland. She studied Fine Art at Loughborough University and Contemporary art at the University of Edinburgh.
Her work begins with archiving photographs and texts of current cultural artefacts and buildings that have been lost due to manmade events such as war or demolition. Through this process, she creates new images based on these archives and imposes narrative rules on their creation. Her working approach is similar to the methodology by the found-footage filmmakers such as Gustav Deutsch. They use a montage of images to create an allegory even though there is not a linear narrative. However, the images in her paintings, which she archived from historical events, reveal the accumulation of time in textures within numerous layers.
